Prainha, near Caniçal at Madeira’s eastern tip, is usually described as the island’s only permanent natural sand beach; almost everywhere else on Madeira, the coast is pebble or volcanic rock. The sand here is coppery rather than pale, and the dry, yellow-brown landscape around it is a departure from the green that covers most of the island.
